  • Can I apply for a lot and pay by check or cash?
We prefer that all applicants apply and pay online. However, we can accommodate those who wish to pay by cash or check. Use the Contact form to request these alternate payment methods.
  • May I share a lot with a friend?
Yes. Each gardener may designate one additional person to assist in maintaining a lot.
  • May I sell the produce I raise in the garden?
No. Our gardens are intended for individual gardeners and their families. You may certainly give away produce to friends and neighbors and donate to a food bank, but you may not sell your produce.
  • Is the garden fully organic, or can I use chemical fertilizers and weed killers if I do so sparingly?
Our garden is 100% organic. Use of any non-organic materials is prohibited.
  • Is the garden association a not-for-profit and can I deduct my annual lot fee on my taxes?
Gladstone Community Gardening Association is a Member Benefit Corporation, and not a charitable entity. You cannot deduct fees or donations when filing tax forms.
  • What do you do with my deposit when I join the garden?
All new members pay a one-time refundable $50.00 deposit. Funds from deposits are held in a reserve account. When a gardener leaves the garden and his or her lot is in good condition, the deposit is fully refunded.
  • How many individual lots may I have?
A first-year gardener may have one full lot or one half-lot. After the first year, a gardener may obtain a second lot, provided that the member is in good standing and sufficient lots are available to those who wish to obtain one.
  • Does the garden association provide tools for use in the garden?
No. Gardeners are responsible for providing their own tools. There are a few wheelbarrows available for hauling plant waste to the garden’s compost pile. A few members of the garden offer tilling services for a fee. Otherwise, the garden’s mowers, trimmers, and tillers are for use during supervised work parties only.
  • Do I really need to get a parking pass for Meldrum Bar Park from the city of Gladstone?
Gladstone Residents May Obtain a Free Parking Pass: Residents of the City of Gladstone can obtain up to 2 free parking passes by visiting City Hall, 18505 Portland Ave. Bring a government issued ID as well as a piece of mail showing your name and current Gladstone address. If you are not sure if you are a City of Gladstone resident, you can search for your address HERE. Non-residents: If you are not a resident of the city of Gladstone, you must either purchase a pass at the kiosk each time you enter the park ($3 daily) or purchase an annual pass ($40). You can purchase an annual pass from the kiosk at the entrance, but you still have to swipe your pass each time you enter. Because traffic entering the park can back up while users pay at the kiosk, we recommend purchasing a pass at the kiosk and then taking that card to the Gladstone City Hall (8505 Portland Ave.) in exchange for a hangtag that you place on your dash or hang on your rear-view mirror. You may also purchase an annual pass at city hall. HOWEVER, if you are lucky enough to have a garden lot that’s easily accessible from the inner roadway inside the garden gate, you can bypass the permit requirement as long as you always park in one of the designated parking areas off the inner roadway.
  • Are raised beds permitted?
Yes. We have established standards for constructing raised beds, and gardeners must adhere to these and obtain written approval from the board. If you would like to review these standards before applying for a lot, please email contact@gladstonegarden.org.
  • Is the garden open year round?
Yes. Members can access their lots year round. Water is generally available from early April to late October.
  • What are the rules about community work hours?
Each gardener is required to perform community work hours per assigned lot(s). Half lots require two hours of community work during the growing season. Each full lot requires four hours of community work. To maintain membership the following year, work hours must be completed by October 31 of the current year.
  • Is the water in the garden drinkable?
Water in the garden is untreated. We do not recommend drinking it.
  • When I paid for my lot online, my receipt shows the dates that my “subscription” covers. I’m confused; I thought the growing season was March 1 to February 1.
All purchases of garden lots online are handled by our web platform, Wix, which treats our lots as annual subscriptions. There is no way to adjust this. However, we do provide messaging at the point of purchase to explain that the “subscription” to your lot is effective March 1 to February 1, regardless of when you pay for the lot.
  • What are the rules about raised beds?
The standards for constructing raised beds are available from the Members Only site. Find these under Membership Documents.
