I've adopted a strategy several gardeners in the South use to deal with extreme heat and that is using shade cloth. It comes in varying degrees of weave for 30%, 40% or 50% shade. My lettuces really like it and so does my Rhubarb. My peppers were sun scalded last year and I didn;t realize that is what caused the large white sections on my peppers. this year I have shade cloth to protect them. It isn't very expensive and can be re-used from year to year.
